Teary Gemz is a portrait hidden in abstraction. I didn’t set out to draw a face, but one revealed itself as I stepped back. The red shape near the top became the gem. My name is Karamoko Diaby. I was born and raised in New York, but my roots trace back to West Africa. My name means 'teacher' or 'great scholar' in Mandinka, a language spoken in parts of the Ivory Coast, where my family originates. Maybe that’s why I’m always evolving not just as an artist, but as a person, constantly learning and observing. I create to give my subconscious mind space to breathe, to speak without needing to explain itself. My art helps me see the parts of myself that usually stay tucked away from the world. Most people would call me introverted, but I prefer to listen first. I enjoy observing how the world unfolds, how people navigate it, and what gets overlooked in between. My work might seem abstract to the untrained eye, but to me, it’s a language. Not one built from words but from feelings, instincts, and internal rhythm. I believe art should open dialogue. Not just about beauty or concept, but about who we are when no one’s looking.
