ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I set myself the challenge of creating a portrait a day, over January 2022. I limited the materials to pastel-pencil, using two shades of red, and black. The motivation for these portraits was the common phrase 'keep warm,' and how clothing can create protection, comfort and either uniformity or individuality. In most of these portraits, the subjects are wearing balaclavas. In all, they're wearing winter clothes I'm interested in things in categories. Or things that are the same, but different. As such, the complete set of portraits works as a whole. The limits and possibilities of the portrait are fascinating.

John Chamberlain

John Chamberlain is an Artist and Illustrator who uses hand drawn and painted techniques. Most recently he produced illustrations for the branding agency United by Design. The work was on the theme of archiving the inner city. This focused on areas of Paris, Philadelphia and London. Film, theatre, music and literature often inform his work. He enjoys drawing a wide range of subjects such as portraits, figures and architecture. In 2021, he completed the MA Illustration and Book Arts at Cambridge School of Art. Before this, he studied at Edinburgh College of Art on the BA Illustration course.
