This drawing is part of my ongoing series of "love letters" to the Drakensberg, a tribute to the landscapes that have shaped my life. Inspired by a holiday in Sani Pass, it captures the solitude and serenity that I always find in these mountains. The figure walking down the winding road feels like an extension of myself, moving through a place that holds both history and a sense of discovery. The small house stands as a quiet witness to the vast, rugged beauty of the Drakensberg, a symbol of the simple, unchanging refuge these mountains have always offered me. The deep reds and browns in the foreground reflect the earth’s raw texture, while the blues and greys of the mountains in the distance speak of permanence, of something far greater than any moment or experience. Each drawing in this series carries a part of my heart, and this one is no different. Sani Pass, with its wild, winding roads and untamed beauty, has always held a special pull for me. In this piece, I’ve tried to capture the quiet solitude that I feel every time I return to these mountains—a journey both outward and inward, through landscapes that are as much a part of me as my own memories.

I believe that Art should not merely serve as decoration but act as a gateway for the complex and often paradoxical truths of existence. Art should resonate on a profound level, transcending the superficial response of "that’s a pretty picture." It should evoke emotions, provide solace, provoke thought, and at times, even unsettle the viewer. My work is shaped by an unending search for meaning and connection. I am driven by a sense of restlessness, and the persistent feeling of being a stranger, and my journey has been one of looking inward to memories and outward to the elusive nature of human connection and the inexorable beauty of the world. My pieces often emerge from moments of intense recall—fragments of memories or dreams, experiences felt rather than fully understood. This inner landscape, shaped by the emotional echoes of past moments, forms the heart of my artistic exploration. Influenced by the philosophical insights of Albert Camus, Viktor Frankl, and Carl Jung, my work delves into the complex layers of human experience. Camus’ exploration of the absurd, Frankl’s quest for meaning in adversity, and Jung’s ideas of the unconscious provide a philosophical framework that guides me as I translate my inner experiences into form and colour. I draw from these thinkers to explore our shared vulnerabilities and the often-invisible threads that connect us to each other and to our environment. Artistically, I am inspired by Cubism’s deconstruction, Expressionism’s emotional rawness, and Fauvism’s striking colour. My compositions are fragmented yet cohesive, each piece a study in emotional resonance. Through layers of abstraction, I aim to capture the nuances of human experience—the joy, the melancholy, the in-betweens. My art is not simply a reflection of the world but a meditation on the deeper, often overlooked, forces that shape us. IG: TT:
