ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The drawing was created for the two years in lockdown 2019-2020. The images are of vintage chairs broken and leaning into the other. there are small intimate areas where the limbs touch. A small gesture means so much! I use the chair as a stand in for bodies. By fracturing or shifting the intended function away from the object I reveal emotional and psychological sentiments. The chair image is created by rubbing pressing in three layers of graphite pencil each of a different grade. Then the white background of the paper is covered over with a black powder called “Channel Black.” I work with this medium because of the finished product. The graphite has a mirror like quality which reflects the lights around it and as one moves the drawing seems to move as well. The black background holds the space- it creates a neutral ground for the subtle shift that happens when viewing.
