Your face in a fresh raindrop Print

Many things are born by chance. What is what we call chance? What makes an artist, a piece of artwork and its title collide in the same place? Sometimes the timing of things is what surprises me more than the "being at the right place" for seeing things happen in a certain way. Sometimes for great things to happen to us we have to just wait. This painting on A3 paper waited for its title for about two years. I had almost forgotten I had never really given it a title I was happy with. And I only used "work in progress" titles, and they were funny. I am shy even to mention "Your face is like an egg", which was one of such titles! One day, a good friend of mine, who has my same name, came to visit my studio and stopped to watch at this piece for some time, and definitely he stared at it longer than all the others. (He also promised buying it lol) Then he simply said: "So, what is it? What's the name you gave it." I replied that the situation wasn't clear yet. He said: "You know what? This looks to me like a raindrop!". I was a bit sad about it because I hoped people would easily see the face which is right there made out of patches of a colorful puzzle. So I said: "There's ... also a face." He said: "Yeah, I see it. But it's like a raindrop!" So the lightning stroke. I saw a face reflected in a raindrop. I loved it. That title stayed until today. I hope you like it. The message I poured into this special raindrop is that we are the world and the world is us. Is the classical concept that we are within the universe and that the universe is within us. Everyone is today familiar with it. And this painting really is a mini universe. Take all the media I used in one place: tempera, wax pastels, graphic markers, chalk pastels, acrylics, ink pens and pencils! The result is compact, dense, powerfully intense, intriguing and it really kinda sticks to your memory. It's about that chrome-egg-yolky yellow perhaps. It's perhaps the cubist approach to the portrait of a face that seems sad but also happy, extrovert but also meditative. An ever changing face that contains all the variety of human emotions, and which expresses them all at once. Now, are they all happening at the same time, inside? Or are they happening in the same place? When does one emotion start and another begin? It's really fun to explore things like this with art making. Private Collection M. Marek, Slovakia.
