Metamorphosis 1 Print

My Inspiration We went on honeymoon to Thailand. We went to a butterfly farm. Here we encountered the most magnificent clouds of multi-coloured butterflies. When I viewed images of plastic marine pollution, these same images of butterflies came to mind as plastic bags ‘flew’ graciously in the sea. The artist Damien Hirsh makes magnificent large paintings of butterflies. I too wanted to challenge myself to create plastic paintings of these spiritual, metamorphic creatures. The butterflies symbolise hope, spirituality and transformation. My hope is that man will soon transform their relationship with plastic, the material that is slowly choking our oceans. Process In the beginning I did lots of sketches. From these I chose a composition that I was happy with. I loosely painted it on my board. Interestingly this was to change numerous times over the month of creation. I spent a long time mixing colours to get the colour of ‘hope’ and ‘transformation’. After collecting papers and plastics I made over a hundred butterflies. Later I chose the best twenty. I used these in a ‘three dimensional manner’ to build my paintings. This painting’s subtle colour will make it a beautiful piece for any modern space.
