The project “Sargasso” (Seaweed) is a meditation about duality that can be recognized in all features of life, in all ways of being, in all rules of society. What inspired me to create “Sargasso II” is my interest in the phenomenon of mimicry and camouflage in nature. I am fascinated to see in how innumerable ways animals imitate ever changing substrata and try to hide themselves, on the other hand they exhibit the most fantastic colors and assume mimetic spots to disguise as seaweed, sticks or rocks. “Sargasso” develops the idea that transparent layers give meaning to the underlying background and express the mystery of hiding and unveiling. Sparkling spots are painted on very thin sheets of Japanese paper glued in layers and fastened with acrylic on hydrophilic gauze. This work consists of 3 layers that are hung on a wooden bar. The bar has Velcro adhesive points. The soft Velcro side points are attached to the back of the work. The work after unrolling must be hang out at room temperature to become straight. Two layers hang loosely over each other and are attached at the top of the work.

Netherlands
Born in 1949 San Sebastian, Spain, lives in Netherlands and France - Large Conceptual Installations - New projects each year - Light & heavy materials - Unconventional techniques developing works passing over the borders of sculpture and painting - Project books with special layouts - Active in many countries. My esthetic standpoint is based on the duality between life and death. Therefore in each of my projects I choose materials out of two types, either light translucent or heavy opaque ones. Among the first ones are light textile materials, as gauze, rice paper, tracing paper, organza, the second type includes lead, sea salt, wood, charcoal, porcelain and stone. I have developed my projects in the numerous places where I lived; they reflect my nourishment with the local cultures as well as the spiritual significance of the installation site. Six or seven process steps make up every project: from identifying the concept and suitable installations spaces, through the transformation of poor materials into poetic objects, to the final design and the production of books about the realization of the art work.
