Static State Of Mind Print

With this artwork, I wanted to portray how a person may feel during a dissociative and depressive period. I use art as a tool to help me differentiate between what is classified as normal and what is a dissociative state of mind. I experience depression daily. This artwork is an expression of my feelings and has become an extension of my cluttered mind. I hope it allows the viewer to visualize my mental activity while standing on the precipice. The round frame induces a voyeuristic sense because it makes the viewer feel as if they are peering into another person’s life, through a camera lens. The background, web-like drawing, uses lines to draw the viewer into the work. This technique replicates the feeling of a depressive episode when one feels inclined to stay in their dark bedroom forever because their bedroom is their safe space. Yet, in the bed drawing, (in the middle of the work), there are nightmarish figures superimposed on the edges of the bed. These act as representations of issues and stressors people face, and how being in a constant state of fight or flight will cause you to dissociate. It enforces the many issues of fragmentation in wider society. This may make my reflection more difficult to see but requires more attention to observe the work itself. I do not want to isolate my dilemmas as an independent issue, rather my experience against a background of current psychological angst.
