ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This digital artwork depicts the Po-i-Kalyan courtyard in the old city of Bukhara, Uzbekistan. Po-i-Kalyan literally means “the Foot of the Great” in Persian, a reference to the 12th century Kalan minaret which graces the old city, the only structure to be spared the ravages of Genghis Khan. The viewer stands in the darkness within the many-domed halls of the complex. Their gaze travels through the arch, beyond the courtyard, beyond the outer wall, at the domes of the Mir-i-Arab complex opposite it. The fantastical tile work and the dome of Central Asian blue gleams in the sunlight, as if almost otherworldly
