ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Buck Leaping This is a digital image created from an analogue source, this buck deer includes a 'dropcloth' style abstract painting, scanned with a buck shaped piece of paper. The cut out animal and the drop cloth are combined in various ways on my scanner to create this series of animal silhouettes. The series includes a variety of west coast and Canadian wildlife, and most creatures are presented in both negative and positive space versions, and facing in both directions. The 'dropcloth' background is made from the sheets of paper I cover my work surface with, and they start out as a literal drop cloth to catch the paint that spills, drips and runs off other things I paint. This mix of pinks and warm colours was from Valentine's day art projects. My travels by motorcycle have taken me across much of Canada, and while motorcyclists are often nervous of collisions with deer, I love to see them anywhere other than on a paved surface.

Born in Toronto Ontario, I'm now fortunate enough to live on the west coast of Canada, and I'm completely in love with the natural environment around me. While my art is seldom a literal representation of my landscape, the natural world I walk through informs the textures, lines and colours in my work. I'm presenting a series of animal silhouette images, of Canadian wildlife, mostly west coast creatures, including Elk, Bear, Orca, Starfish, Deer, Bison, Beaver, Salmon and Cod. This series of silhouettes will be developed in a variety of medium, the 'Dropcloth' series uses backgrounds created using the paper that covers my work surface when I paint, and the 'Maps' series uses old paper maps used for motorcycle touring in Canada. The Pen and Ink series explores using black lines to define positive and negative space of animal silhouettes, by using lines represent textures of plants and also to outline the shapes of animals. The animal silhouette series has expanded to include trees and clouds, so the creatures have an environment. In 2024 I'm expanding my offerings with paintings as well as collages and drawings.
