ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“Dancing in the Street” is part of a larger portfolio, “See What I Hear”, of illustrations based on song lyrics. “Dancing in the Street”, is a song first recorded by Martha and the Vandellas, that was written by Marvin Gaye, William “Mickey” Stevenson, and Ivy Jo Hunter. This Motown classic on the Gordy label was covered by The Mamas and The Papas, Van Halen, David Bowie and Mick Jagger, The Kinks, Little Richard, the Grateful Dead and others. While some believe the song references Detroit’s habit of opening up fire hydrants on hot summer days so that kids could dance in the street, and others believe it was a call for people to march for racial equality, Reeves said that we just wanted everyone to dance in the street and have a good time. The image size is 12 x 12 in. with a 2 in. boarder. The paper size is 16 x 16 in. Each print is produced in an edition of 33 on acid free archival paper and signed and numbered in the boarder below the image.
