ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The figure is depicted in fragments that suggest realistic as well as abstract form. I chose this method of representation because it emulates my beliefs regarding our fellow man. We live on the simple basis of what we perceive. With this work, I offer the viewer a perception of an image, hoping to provoke a cognizant artistic collaboration with the sculpture. The realistic elements act as points of reference, while the abstraction contributes a kindred vagueness to individual perception.

Biography Andrea Paolino is a native of Southern California. While attending college she spent three years in Florence, Italy attending Accademia di Belle Arte and Villa Schifanoia on fellowships, scholarships and grants. Upon her return to Southern California, she completed her terminal degree in Sculpture at California State University, Long Beach. During her tenure there she developed her technique of sculptural development through her use of photographic study. Although the sculpture she makes and photography she shoots are interwoven techniques, her two dimensional and three dimensional work have become their own art form. As she works with a new idea for a sculpture, she explores shapes in black and white photography, develops a proof of concept drawing and finally the sculpture. The photography becomes its own form of art as the drawing acts as a connection point to the final idea for the sculpture in three dimensions.
