About The Artwork

Polaroid is an organic, living creature that unfortunately has an expiration date. Once that date comes, one has a finite window when Polaroid can still be shot with results. Yet some of the most fascinating Polaroid picture come from expired film during this "expired time", but eventually the chemical pods will dry up and you'll be left with these dark brown frames with no image, no magic left inside them. I created "Hourglass" as reminder that Polaroid, like everything in life, has an expiration day. I wanted it to be ambiguous what amount of sand (time) is left in the hourglass as a reminder that we never know where time stands with anything in life. A kind of nudge to not only Polaroid photographers, but everyone, to live life in the now. Life in the instant.

Bret Watkins is a Los Angeles based Polaroid photographer. Bret is drawn to spaces, faces and neon places. Polaroid has become Bret’s medium of choice because they find there is something about being able to capture a moment in time and see it develop in your hand minutes later that is truly special. Polaroid has such a dreamy quality to it, so my goal is to always create a world that feels real yet surreal. I want them to be a place you've never been but always wanted to see.
