This piece is created in quiet contemplation, using discarded remnants of old canvases, used painting rags, bits of rubbish from the street, or whatever catches my eye. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold — built on the idea that by embracing flaws and imperfections, you can create an even stronger, more beautiful piece of art. The Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, calls for seeing beauty in the flawed or imperfect. “Wabi" came to connote rustic simplicity, freshness or quietness, and can be applied to both natural and human-made objects as an expression of understated elegance. It can also be used to refer to the quirks and anomalies that arise from the process of making something, which is seen to add uniqueness and elegance to the finished object. "Sabi" refers to the beauty or serenity that comes with age, when the life of the object and its impermanence are evidenced in its patina and wear, or in any visible repairs. I am asking the viewer, while enjoying this intricate piece of art which is made from scraps or objects taken from the ground, to celebrate their own imperfections and scars.
