I created this piece to celebrate the beauty of Stonehenge at dawn, when it belongs to nature. I am lucky enough to have known the stones before the restrictions were brought in. We could go up, camp nearby and then go to the stones at dawn regardless of whether it was a solstice or not, we were just locals enjoying our birth rite. The crows who populate Stonehenge and other ancient sites nearby such as Avebury and Wayland Smithy have always fascinated me. They prowl the sites with an eerie intelligence, like ancestral guardians. The light that morning was incredible, making the blue in the sky and the green on the ground look almost neon! The Heel Stone is significant, stood alone, outside the Henge. Some people think that the round stone circle represents the divine feminine and the pointed Heel Stone the divine masculine. The shadow it casts symbolises the ceremonial fertilisation of the Earth Mother by the Sky Father at the height of his power on the longest day.
