I chose mixed media (or paint + collage, depending on the original) because it allows me to layer textures — the smooth glass of the bowl, the translucent water, the rippling bodies of the fish — in a way that feels rich and dimensional. This layering helps bring the subject to life with both realis...

When I was a kid I grew up surrounded by felt tips, paints and scrap paper. My mum was a designer so she had her little studio linked to our house and we often had to patiently wait in factories or at the seamstresses - in order to get through this time we would sketch (and probably fight with each other, we definitely were not saints!). It was like this at home too, if we had nothing to do my brother and I would naturally get out the pens rather than switch on the TV. Nothing really changed, I still don't watch TV & spend every moment I can with my head crooked over a pad. A lot of my work is influenced by colour and the quirkiness of every day. I like patterns and I like vibrancy. I can't stand too much perfection or symmetry which is fortunate because I'm not naturally neat. I try to use as many different materials as possible to create a more interesting effect. As well as working at a small Soho based agency where I am bent over my easel all day I also do as many freelance and commission based projects in order to broaden the scope & work from home in my lovely studio space. I'm currently working on a variety of projects from personal portrait commissions, linen design for a hotel to illustration for the English National Opera! It's the variety in this career that I enjoy so much. I wake up most mornings excited by something I'm working on or with another big idea which makes me jump out of bed for a new day.
