About The Artwork

'Wednesday is Indigo Blue' is the artists' tribute to the book with the same title penned by pioneering researcher Richard Cytowic and distinguished neuroscientist David Eaglemen. These two men spent 20 years persuading colleagues that multi-sensory experiences known as synesthesia was in fact real, and an important scientific brain phenomenon rather than a mere curiosity. As a victim of a violent robbery and attempted murder in 1998, the artist begin experiencing what he perceived as seizures and admitted himself to the local hospital for testing. With no relief, he checked himself out of the hospital only four days later. It would not be until years later at 3:00 AM in the morning on January 22, 2002, that he learned of the phenomenon known as synesthesia by chance. That morning, he awoke abruptly from an episode of sleep paralysis he had begun experiencing shortly after his traumatic brain injury as a result of the previous violent attack. During this particular episode of sleep paralysis, the artist in an attempt to awake his body and rise from the bed induced what is commonly referred to as an out-of-body experience. Unable to sleep, the artist went into his home office to investigate and research further. He located a doctoral thesis by a professor at Waterloo University discussing how one is able to utilize the state of sleep paralysis to induce an out-of-body experience. Included in the lengthy text were examples of other neurological phenomena that occur while humans are conscious, including synesthesia. He learned then what he never understood, most other people do not experience the world around them in the same way. In this piece, the artist attempts to convey to the viewer how the gift of synesthesia can be a beautiful thing, that's quite overwhelming at times. Asked how best to describe it, he stated, "I feel everything". In creating art, it's the artist's hope that parents will research and discuss with their children how they individually perceive their world. "While learning, if your child is throwing a tantrum over his building blocks labeled with a black number 3, yet argues it's a blue number 3, you only have the gift to see it, he can see it and perceive it simultaneously, your toddler is right, and you're wrong. It makes learning very frustrating at times for both the child and teacher." The research about the over 80 types of synesthesia and learning is still in its infancy. A parent or teacher who is educated about synethesia will have a positive influence on the personal development of the child. And it may support learning performances. There is currently still not a lot of support for synesthetic children.
