A white lotus is a symbol of purity in the mind and soul, in Eastern cultures, in Buddhism and Hinduism. ” The True Nature of Mind” is to be free. In 2003, I felt a personal challenge to bring together all my experiences of life, philosophy, travels, combined with the many art materials I’ve worked with- into a new personal art world that was universal at the same time. I was deeply drawn to the mandala, as a frame, the ancient symbol of the spiritual universe. Mandalas have been used since the 9th century as tools for meditation. Traditionally, mandalas represent a perfect universe with symmetrically placed circles and squares. The object of worship, the deity, is in the center. I have worked this perfectly symmetrical form into a deconstructed asymmetrical version for our 21st century eyes. Instead of ancient deity images in the center, I place contemporary images, some ancient writings of wisdom, a power symbol or a protector, all mixed with the images “worshipped” in our contemporary culture, such as images of celebrity or beauty. A collage of nature images from my photography, symbols from Eastern religions, oil paint, open source images from the internet, combined with of plaster, gold leafing, layers of resin, oil paint, and Tibetan papers create the rich luminous textures. The print is created from a high res scan of the original SOLD piece.
