ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Still life image making is quiet, quiet and self reflective. The magic of still life images is that they can show us a new way of looking at the ordinary objects around us. The regal aura of a Morandi painting or the complex beauty of an allegorical Dutch still life demand a certain type of looking. Cezanne took the still life away from genre and into a modernist tradition of true image making. Building an image on philosophical ideas rather than representation. For me as an artist the still life is where looking started…it is where the understanding of pictoral space began to evolve. This act of looking and responding has become my “hand”…my “language” and the basis of my approach to all image making.

As an image maker I like to work with degrees of abstraction. I have a few recent series of images that are figure oriented. These works have been born out of a very minimalist foundation where I tried to achieve a dynamic in a shallow space using a limited palette of earth tones and grey scale and pushing the limitations of the palette as far as I could hopefully evoking a sense of color. The earlier experiments had me thinking about the muscularity of the organic shapes pushing and pulling on each other within 2 dimensions. Even the simple shapes took on personality and in my mind there is always a battle or a tussle between the two forces and the abstract marks and movements held a narrative. The muscularity under the skin of the painting and a life force emanating from deep inside the painting is what I look for. …and after all that I still tell everyone…ultimately I am a still life painter…
