ABOUT THE ARTWORK

There is anticipation here; the moment before a goal is attained, the bright-eyed euphoria of being near to one's yearning. The process is one of self-inquiry, of the search for authenticity, and a releasing of control of outcomes, a relaxing of pencil and brushstrokes, the allowing of unintended occurrences, and perceived errors in the creative process. Reducing my thinking to a minimum, I follow the stroke events, almost like a divination, to allow myself to draw loosely and freely, then dive into the results of the initial burst of activity to tease-out forms, recognisables, coaxing a solidification and coherence, discovering new forms and new found territories, until a story, an emotion emerges. The subject matter starts in feeling, the story emerges as I step out on the journey with a spirit of allowing. Thus it becomes a process of adventuring and discovery, even for myself; eagerly awaiting where it will take me and who I will meet along the way. I start with pencil on paper, to give me an anchor in the physical world, a tactile stage in the initial discovery process. As I am nomadic by nature, transferring to the digital realm allows me to carry a bigger kit of tools and possibilities, neatly in my backpack.

My work, though 2D, embodies a sculptural, organic, and expressive quality, delicately balancing on the line between the rational and non-rational mind. The process commences with a purely intuitive exploration guided by emotion, energy, and an innate urge to express. As I progress, I transition towards perceptive, deductive thought processes, shaping the lines into coherent forms that reveal meaningful shapes—whether fantastical or closer to the banal. This transformative journey seeks to tease loose, expressive forms into a meaningful narrative or an expressive apparition. For me, this artistic endeavor is a spiritual practice, deliberately avoiding the intrusion of intellect to preserve the purity of expression. Influences abound, drawing from architecture, natural forms, nature's dynamics, the stillness of meditation, anthropology, and the rich diversity of world cultures. I aspire for my lines to exist in tension, oscillating between what Cy Twombly described as the childlike line and the masterful, physically controlled draughtsman's line. In my exploration of color, which comes into play following the drawing phase, I am deeply interested in the relationship between color, fascinated by the clashes, balances, conflicts, and harmonies that color and color-temperature can generate. This exploration extends to the contrast between roughly and smoothly painted areas, where humanly felt expressively rough parts interplay with refined, considered smooth parts. My art-making process also encompasses a subversive streak, finding joy and a sense of freedom by challenging even the rules I set for myself. Simultaneously, I harbor a deep sense of obligation, admiration, and appreciation for the past masters who have paved the way. Yet, beneath the surface, there is more to my creative ethos. I have always been drawn to, and fascinated with, the powerful energy emanating from artworks. It is a force I feel intensely, and my creative desire is anchored within this realm of energy. Sometimes, my work will contain elements of humor or absurdity, as they are very real parts of life at times. Currently on a nomadic journey across the world, I am immersed in diverse cultures, blending the handmade with digital art for portability as an artist. This fusion allows me to absorb cultural inspiration and embrace the challenge of personal growth.
