ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting was created as part of a series influenced by cinema. The composition was created in the style of a post WW2 movie marquee without text. Commercial film and television has always fascinated me. My work explores the extreme emotions (such as fear or sadness) we seek out in entertainment as a primary means to escape boredom. Rather than imitating film, these paintings allude to the emotions of a Hollywood blockbuster, yet are based off of rather simple and innocuous photographs. Most of my works incorporate common lens effects seen in film such as motion blur, chromatic aberrations, and wide aperture focal points. With our daily consumption of media within the digital age of immediacy and an unending loop of content, these works are a collaged reflection of our idealized quest for entertainment.
