ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In this contemporary wildlife painting, the artist, who is passionate about the bushveld and wildlife recalls a moment when in a safari truck a rhino started charging towards them. Backing away was not going to help as the rhino was faster than the reversing game drive vehicle. There was nothing to do but remain calm. "This rhino then came charging towards us but went right past the truck up the road and towards whatever was making it angry. It was so close i could easily have touched it. Fortunately we survived to tell the tale. A family member some years back in Kenya had not been as fortunate. I was filled with gratefulness and relief. I wanted to catch that moment of the charge—that moment when we feel under attack, and then survive." The symbols in the background are African in origin. The symbol of protection is among them.

Ann is a vibrant and prolific artist, wildlife photographer, and author. She was voted in 2020 as one of South Africa's top artists. She initially became known for her ‘ewe/sheep’ series of work. Whilst maintaining her ironic humor she has painted a number of other series of works, including ‘Wild Life’ ‘Zulu Lulu’ and 'Going to the Dogs series. A recurring theme in her work is a play on words and the use of popular jargon. Her quirky, humorous, yet profoundly insightful art, allows the viewer not only to laugh at themselves but to examine many of the absurd aspects of life.
