ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Process is king with this piece, made on a small wooden panel. Joint compound is layered on thick and sculpted to make graceful waves and ridges, like frosting on a cake. Colors are then applied before the compound dries, allowing them to soak in, drift around, and interact with the joint compound in curious and beguiling ways.

Some artists are easily able to explain what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how they do it. That’s not me. Pulling back for the big picture, here’s my Life Statement. I simply hope to be at peace with being alive, and to love myself. Looking back, I was always compelled to be creative; I loved drawing, during which I felt OK just being. For the rest of my life, not so much. I do love trees, though. Clouds, water, sunlight. Letting go and enjoying those things. When I’m making art I’m making my version of those things, looking for a few moments of acceptance.
