ABOUT THE ARTWORK
When painting I’m usually thinking about my time spent farming. I’m considering our environment the safety of our food supply and the rural landscape of The Great Plains. This painting is no different but it was painted at a time when my daughter was experiencing frequent and painful migraines. Watching her deal with these headaches and knowing I was powerless to help was difficult. She was so completely isolated and alone in her suffering.

Paul was born in Viborg SD in June of 1967. Growing up on a farm in Southeastern SD has given Paul an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but will also experience the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. The paintings are colorful, emotionally autobiographical and mirror the artist's feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at BHSU and when he is not teaching or painting he can be found playing guitar(sometimes singing) at local restaurants, bars, churches, coffee shops, festivals etc....
