ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'Arise' I used as inspiration for the painting, El Greco's masterpiece known as 'The vision of Saint John' or 'The fifth seal of the apocalypse' I have used the same kind of 'stretching' of the figures that was a style of painters such as El Greco. El Greco's work is documented by art historians as having something of a mystical element within Christian Catholicism. I have given the figures a mysteriousness by the use of colour, poses and slightly out of this world or dream-like quality that the overall picture generates to the viewer. On a personal note my life was going through something of a transition of rebuilding. The title perhaps gives away this sentiment and the figures should appear to be rising as if from ashes or even as in the book of revelation figures rise from the earth during an event described as the rapture. I have used a mixed technique of glazing and scumbling and chiaroscuro to create depth and drama. All the figures in the picture are inspired by people I know and whose example of faith under pressure has been an inspiration to me. Figures include: The worshipper, sacrificial love, social justice for all, prophetic witness, war wounds and three figures rising from the grave as yet unidentified. I hope that when you look at this picture you will be encouraged that there is hope to arise even after disaster! The acrylic paint is professional grade, the canvas is on a 'deep' frame which means it will project 1 and a half inches from the wall. I have included hanging eye hooks on the back so it is ready to hang. This picture has been exhibited by me three times. I painted the picture with a view to it not needing a frame. The exact size in cm's = 90x60cm, projection from the wall = 4cm. The price is higher than my normal pictures due to cost and time. Picture will be packed in a box that includes wooden supports for protection. Anthony Martin 08/09/2024

"Anthony Martin’s art style is characterized by a deep sense of wonder and exploration of vast concepts such as time, space, and spirit. His works often reflect the intricate contours of natural objects, like a modest pebble, and are known for their painstaking attention to detail. This meticulous approach to repeated forms is a testament to his meditative process of artmaking, which serves as a personal exploration of his faith. His art is described as serious yet fresh, playful, and wonderfully unique, capturing both cosmic principles and the humble human experience." Ruth Smith, Gallery Curator and artist. UK Anthony Martin’s playful pen and ink pieces are the exploration of a personal language. They have an illustrative quality, considering issues and concepts which Anthony researches such as ancient history, scientific developments, and biblical texts. He will begin with the textual element, writing short summations of the research that will anchor the piece. The drawings begin in one corner, flowing outward as Anthony’s mind is encouraged to wonder. His ‘hybrids’ series contemplates scientific experimentation that stitches together human and animal cells. For Anthony, this research has a nefarious underbelly; combining human and animal characteristics to enhance certain abilities for military or technological uses. He questions the morality of playing God and the potential pitfalls. With his hybrids, he explores these questions and anxieties in a humorous manner. His morphing, psychedelic shapes and colours package these serious considerations in an enjoyable aesthetic manner. By Kate Reeve-Edwards, Art Writer UK
