About The Artwork

Cheryl Johnson Oil on Canvas 24 x 30 Admiring Dumas Canvas Oil 24x30x1.5 There is something incredibly powerful and luscious about red. I love the bright cadmium. After seeing this work online I decided to paint a likeness of the work but with more background and embedded color. In my recent show at the Other Art Fair in Brooklyn, I must say this work drew the most comments and attention. The offers I received were exciting to hear and alas the dear ladies that wanted the painting but could only offer half can now get this work as a print. I welcome offers. I am a big fan of Marlene Dumas and emulating this work on a larger scale was powerful. I Understand that The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago showed this work in their show. This Will Have Been: Art, Love & Politics in the 1980s this painting was at the ICA Boston 1980s exhibition and later Christie's sold it for an incredible price. Go Girl. This face jumps forward and grabs you. But you also feel a sense of emptiness. It is said that Marlene Dumas's paintings can be traced back to a photographic source, either collected from the media or taken by the artist herself. I would have liked to meet both the artist and her subject. I was totally inspired by this work and decided to emulate it but on a larger scale. I love Marlene Dumas work. Marlene Dumas is a contemporary South African painter who grew up in Apartheid, and her work not only explores the social struggles of minorities but tackles themes of feminism, sexuality, and identity as well. Thank you Marlene for the inspiration.

Cheryl Johnson Cheryl Johnson is an American abstract artist whose work has appeared in galleries throughout the US. Her works are held in numerous private collections in the US, Europe, and Canada. She maintains a studio in Kauai, HI and divides her time between there and Charlotte, NC. A highly collectible artist. With a long and varied career as an instructional designer and graphic artist. Johnson worked for many years as an instructional designer and graphic designer and was ensconced in a life of technology and marketing. In 2010, she gave up a regular pay cheque at IBM to pursue her love of painting full-time. Cheryl Johnson describes painting as "a way of sharing my internal dialog in an external way. My commitment is to create dynamic yet sensitive, lyrically beautiful, works of art. My work resonates with a passion for color, line and light created to share an expression of overlapping time, memory and reality. My intention is to create work that is truthful and real, that has depth and is compelling from a distance and up close. I have come to believe that gravitas in art relates most specifically to how well the artist can transform an emotional idea into its visual equivalent. ”
