Gary Scott was born in Devon in 1964 and has his studio in Ocean Studios, Plymouth. His work has been widely exhibited including at ING Discerning Eye, the Cork Street Open, KPMG’s Canary Wharf headquarters, London and at Waterperry House, Oxford. Scott has undertaken a number of commissions including the memorial sculpture ‘Free Spirit’ now situated in the heart of St Ives in Cornwall and publically visible. In 2015 he was included in the 'Secret Art Prize' winners show at the Curious Duke Gallery in London and in 2013 won the Art Academy’s Mixed Media Sculpture Prize and was shortlisted for the Threadneedle Prize. Gary was awarded two artists residencies at Brisons Veor, Cape Cornwall (2012 & 2013). 'I want to inspire an emotional, even contemplative response, one that draws the viewer in and invites a reaction through their own memories and feelings. A kind of unconscious dialogue. When sculpting I mostly work with plaster which allows a good degree of spontaneity with the necessity of working quickly as it dries. I love to use sensual sweeping lines incorporating deeply textural surfaces which add further language to the forms. Over the last couple of years I have discovered painting and I really enjoy the immediacy and spontaneity this medium offers; I delight in the use of colour and the textural qualities which echo those in my sculptural work. The dripping and swirling of paint without forethought or planning, using large, sweeping energetic movements results in dynamic intuitive paintings'.
