A while back I was on Ameland (see blog) and painted plein air. The beautiful vast beaches, where sometimes not a human being is to be seen, are a great source of inspiration for me. I called the series sketches because I painted sketchily, almost expressionistically with large and flowing strokes,...

Wim van de Wege is a Dutch artist known for his layered paintings in which experimentation and craftsmanship meet. His work does not emerge in a single gesture but develops gradually. Layer upon layer, he builds his canvases, sometimes allowing earlier traces to remain visible and become part of the final image. This process gives his paintings depth, tension, and an almost tangible sense of history. His artistic foundation was shaped at the academy of fine arts, where he not only mastered technical skills but also discovered the freedom to explore and push boundaries. That investigative spirit still defines his practice. Wim experiments with materials, texture, and composition. He combines paint with mixed media, sands, overpaints, scratches, and adds elements until an image emerges that feels both powerful and richly layered. Although recognizable elements of landscape and architecture often appear in his work, the focus is not on precise representation. It is about atmosphere, experience, and the dynamic interplay between figuration and abstraction. His canvases invite viewers to step closer and discover new details with each encounter. In addition to his artistic practice, Wim runs a gallery in Putten, where he shares his passion for art with a wide audience. His work can be found in private collections and appeals to collectors who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and a visible creative process. Over the past 12 years I have exhibited a lot in the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, England and the USA. Many of my works are included in many private and public collections in more than 40 countries.
