American Collectors at Tate Britain Print

This is a painting within a painting, of one of British artist David Hockney's most famous works: American Collectors (Fred and Marcia Weisman) from 1968. Hockney in the work makes the two characters portrayed, objects among the objects collected. Among the works of art that appear in the painting, there is in fact William Turnbull's sculpture that stands between the Weismans. Hockney had painted Hockney had thus painted a work within a work, and continuing the game, and re-contextualising the British artist's painting at Tate Britain, a second double portrait is inserted, this time of two visitors sitting in front of the painting, silently observing it.
