About The Artwork

This painting represents a baptism scene, which is the public declaration of one's devotion to follow Jesus Christ. A diptych oil painting made up of 5 x 2.5 ft canvas panels was created to present a narrative of dichotomy in the scene where the “old self” remains and the “new self” emerges from the water. The street flood is a metaphor for the washing of sins as well as the relative uncertainty that any faith brings to a follower. This component is part of a thesis project which aims to present a discourse on the process of conversion using Christian iconography and social realities. The project portrays the spiritual conversion as a non-linear process and intends to relay that the Christian faith is a topic that is worth exploring in studio art practice with its complex yet relatable narratives. It also envisages to bring forth a discussion about the Protestant faith and the struggles that a Christian convert experiences firsthand.
