ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I painted this portrait of Angela Davis about 10 years ago. I used a reference photo, which I no longer have access to, but I was intrigued by the expression on her face. The look on her face seemed intense (of course during a dark time in our history), as she was smoking from that pipe. I wanted to capture her stare, her thoughts, and the smoke she exhaled. I admire and appreciate Professor Angela Davis for all of her contributions to our community, her struggle, sacrifices, bravery, strength. I do regret having sold the original painting years ago. I was just learning the art business then and didn't realize I was cheating myself for the amount I'd sold it for. However, I have prints available and newer paintings to be sold, as I am maturing as an artist.

My paintings are generally made from nostalgic or historical events of the Black Diaspora. I see old photographs of so many pioneers of Black American History, that have been lost in the memories of our people, and their lives have been either misinterpreted or deleted by others who tell our history. Our contribution to America and the world’s culture and history is immeasurable. Our history reaches far beyond the shores of North America from slavery. My intention is to contribute, through my artwork, an introduction to younger and future generations, the pioneers of every facet of our history…whether it be entertainment, activism, spiritual leaders, events, etc. When I paint a portrait, the eyes are most important for me to capture. “The eyes are the windows to the soul.” I like to capture the very essence of a person through their gaze, as the camera had originally captured them. I study their expression behind the gaze, wondering what that person’s thoughts might have been, or what where their experiences were before the photo. My medium of choice is acrylic paint, usually on canvas. I’m also experimenting with oils and graphite, which I will be adding to my portfolio very soon.
