Anthology Print

Currently featured in the Durham Art Guild's 66th Annual Juried Exhibition. Here I go again, waxing nostalgic, with a still life oil on panel painting that features a number of old SF paperbacks in my collection. The metal frame is a “floater” with 1/8” clearance around the painting. It is 1 1/4” deep. I don't read nearly as much science fiction as I once did. When I do, it's usually this vintage stuff, in which exciting visions of the future stir a sense of wonder. Now that I live in the actual future (as opposed to the would-be futures in these books, some of which we're already past), I think it's fair to say the future just ain't what it used to be. For this painting, I chose only anthologies with white spines in varying states of decay, corresponding in a way to the varying degrees to which the speculations therein have aged well or not so well.
