At age 44 Tom Ryman had amassed a fleet of riverboats, saloons and businesses that catered to a rowdy river life. Ryman directly profited from alcohol, gambling, and unsavory behavior that Reverend Sam Jones was set to rail against on a hot revival night, and Captain Ryman arrived with friends to see what the reverend had to say about the situation. What happened on the eve of May 10, 1885 was nothing short of a miracle. Reverend Jones, famous for his tent revivals drew a crowd of thousands to his site. Though Ryman arrived as a spectator, the Reverend’s sermon and the energy of the faithful stirred something deep and surprising inside him. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, he’d been saved!
