Just as a bird collects and interlocks the material debris of their environment to weave a nest, a painter plucks colors and layers them in brushstrokes until a satisfying composition is achieved. I build my nest paintings line by swooping line until a warp and weft of hundreds of colored marks emerges, all threaded together in an endless dance on the canvas. I view all of my nest paintings as metaphors for a life lived; a life formed by a series of choices to go in one direction versus another. A seemingly mundane choice in the present may end up having a momentous impact on the future. For are our lives not defined by the people, places and things we encounter and then continue to cross paths with again and again? These twists, turns, reversals, intersections and forks in the road all forge the fabric of a life lived. Our choices, taken in sum, are the nest that we build for ourselves, that we each inhabit and that is never finished, always evolving.

Liz Alderman received her degree in Fine Arts from Harvard University in 1997 where she was awarded the Albert Alkalay Prize. Liz was first exposed to the joys and challenges of making art by her high school teacher Beatrice Thompson of The Brearley School. "B" Thompson's irreverent yet deeply passionate teaching style drove Liz from an early age to embrace unexpected color combinations and luxurious glazes, appreciate the nuance of contour line, and respect the complexities of a sophisticated composition. At Harvard Liz had the privilege of being taught by painters Ellen Phelan, Nancy Mitchnick and Carroll Dunham with studio critiques from visiting artists she revered including Alex Katz, Brice Marden, Elizabeth Murray and David Salle. After her graduation from Harvard Liz was brought aboard Sol LeWitt’s team of artisans, installing his murals at the Sackler Museum of Art in Cambridge, MA as well as the PaceWildenstein Gallery in New York City. Liz completed additional studies in art, design and architecture at the Royal College of Art in London, Harvard's Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the New York Academy of Art, Pratt Institute and Parsons School of Design in New York City.
