"BIG RED" Print

This watercolor is framed without a mat. "BIG RED" is one in my "Underground" series of NYC subway images, done in a non-traditional watercolor technique on Arches archival 100% cotton rag. I wanted to paint urban landscape, but something more unusual than buildings and bridges. I soon realized that few things say New York more than the subway. In the Underground series I try to simplify complex human and station architecture into ragged shapes of light and dark, illuminated by the fractured light of speeding trains. The series explores the rushed, off-balance feeling evoked by traveling in a confined subterranean space -- simultaneously mundane yet vaguely menacing.
