ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This was my first painting for my series about the natural hair community. The subject matters were from a reference photo that I took while accompanying my dear friend to get his biweekly haircut from his longtime barber. The history of the black barbershop entails a strong sense of community, as well as a safe space especially during the time of the Jim Crow Laws. My intention for this painting was to 'zoom in' on the interaction between a client and their barber-loyalty, trust and connection are just a few things that exist between these two individuals, as they both support each other in their existences as black men in a white world.

I am an Afro-Filipina visual artist interested in representing members of my own community through creative means. While attending Laguna College of Art and Design, I have been trained with both traditional and digital mediums. My artwork explores the humanism of BIPOC, my identity and the relationship between these truths. I intend for my work to raise discussion on social, racial, and cultural inequality through the use and re-appropriation of traditional European techniques.
