I consider my work "Momentary Art": a partnership between myself and all of the energies captured over a moment in time from a single ecosystem. My studio is any ecosystem that serves to inspire; my tools; whatever the ecosystem provides me to use. I consider these gifts; tools given to me by God. It is my belief that the ecosystem has its own energy, rhythm and movement. I act as a conduit translating this rhythm, energy and movement to canvas utilizing paint, adhesive and textures made available within the ecosystem. I am more, a “conductor”, rather than a painter. What do I mean by this? Ecosystems are unique and available anywhere; a city street, forest, park, shop, family home…anywhere. Because each ecosystem is dynamic, each painting is completely unique in its rhythm and energy. It is my hope that people take the time to elicit their senses to listen, to see, to touch, and to engage the paintings energy. For example, I will bring my canvas to the beach, lay my canvas in the sand, apply adhesive and create textures with whatever beauty and inspiration is available within the ecosystem. The tools I had mentioned prior. This may be in the form of wood, kelp, rope, an old shoe, and even sea life, most recently Man-O-War (Jellyfish) that had washed to shore. When I discover the rhythm of the environment, I use my hands to apply sand and whatever may be included as it was meant to be. This may be small shell fragments, kelp, string and the like; tuning the canvas prior to performance. Once the canvas is “tuned” and the background created, I, wield my baton (as a conductor of an orchestra would), generally a hollow stick of bamboo or driftwood that find. I immerse it in paint and the movement begins! I will listen to the music that is created within that ecosystem for a period of time and move my arms to the rhythm of the environment; waves, sounds of birds, thunder. People, boats, dogs...whatever presents in that ecosystem during this moment in time (Momentary Art), allowing the energies of my arm movements coupled with the wind to carry the paint to canvas and capturing all of the energy within the environment.
