About The Artwork

As an emerging artist, I offer to bring different aspects of Surrealism to the table, to interpret the genre with my individuality and talents picking the inspirations from the trendy "Big Red Boots". Each of the piece is to represent and promote contemporary optimism and a colorful view of life. Approaching this visual narrative meant looking into childhood stories, influences and wants; the dreams and aspirations we have growing up. Each piece represents models that resonates with the concept of black influences and cultures- what that means is that fashion and style can be an influencing template for contemporary art. The series highlights the influencing factor of how Art imitates the perfect and imperfection of life and just how fashion and style can be a documenting visuals via the Art. The background elements and signs of each paintings are storyline symbolism around my childhood stories- these are elements that somehow resonates with us. It is one of our love language as a child. This series further explore the unique presence of gaze within art and its evolving perspective and meaning for our world. In summary, the theme of my artistic practice feeds on the storyline of the perfect and imperfection of black beauty.

Akanji is a visual artist, based in Lagos, Nigeria. A profilic painter with versatile style. He has participated in group exhibitions, competitions and workshops. His works engage emotions around social and cultural narratives of his immediate environment experimenting on forms, a fundamental element of art, an attempt on realism with both impressionistic and expressionistic influences. His new body of works explore imagery in layered, seemless aesthetic cow patterns inspired by cow skin. This new body of works is brought to life from years of experimentation and practice- the quest to finding an artistic signature style. The new style under the categorization of pop abstractionism is visioned to be developed into wider area of sculptures and installation as its appreciation grows.
