ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The subject of my works is nature and habitats, nostalgia and longing. The works are made of layers of paint and found papers. In my work I move back and forth between placing paint and pasting shreds of paper, covering the papers with more color and then pasting more paper. The work is created partly spontaneously and partly planned in advance. The birds, the other animals, and the vegetation are inspired by my present environment, but some of the works are accompanied by old photographs and letters from my mother, my mother's parents, and my uncles. Sometimes there is page from a Hebrew children's book. Sometimes pieces of text torn from old magazines are pasted onto the work too. I like how their original meaning is changed by the context of the new canvas.

When I was a child my parents would take our family on nature walks and point out and identify birds. As an adult I feel drawn to the subject of birds, their lives and their environments. The birds I observe here, Blackbird, Blue jay and Mourning Dove, are similar to the ones in my homeland. Just as birds gather pieces for their nests, I gather paper pieces from fashion catalogs, old books, music notes, maps, wallpaper sample books and more to create my birds. I also get inspiration from the flora and fauna outside my studio window. Finding shrubs or a branch that creates just the right environment for the assembled bird. I use scrap paper, acrylic paints and found objects on wood. I am a graduate of Beit Berel College, School of Art in Israel. I work, teach and play in my California base studio.
