My work uses abstract shapes to stand in for bodies and landscapes as well as emotions and relationships. Taking design from the microcosm of cellular structures and internal organs as well as the macrocosm of an undersea world or stars in the universe, these forms interact in ways that describe feelings and experiences that can be hard to put in words. Using abstraction, I avoid gender, race, and other specific descriptors, instead pointing out the ways we are similar. I can show that we have more in common than we think; that we are not alone in our complex emotions and the ways we interact with each other and the world. These forms often reach out, but don’t connect, or merge in beautiful or awkward ways. They may shift to avoid contact or set themselves apart. The colors may indicate a body part or organ, but really be a place on a map. Playing with these contradictions suggests more layers of meaning, but nothing too specific. The work is open to interpretation. Utilizing all mediums and surfaces, I will choose what to use depending on my own time and the materials available. I try to never leave too much trace of my mark making but you always know that someone’s hand made it, not a machine. I work intuitively, often beginning with a random choice of color, leaving some things to chance, but always controlling the final outcome. I can adapt my way of working to my circumstances, whether that be a dining table, a sunporch, or a floor. Currently working in a large studio, I am getting back to larger scale oil painting after years of needing to work small and in water-based media. I am looking forward to playing with many layers of materials and ideas.

Lori was born and raised in the quirky 70’s and 80’s in Omaha, Nebraska. She received a BFA in painting from the state university, where the main mode of teaching was “keep going” or “stop”. She then married and moved to New York to begin a grand life plan. There she attended Hunter College taking classes with some famous people and graduating with an MFA in painting. Facing a divorce, disappointment, fear, and far too many people on a daily basis, she returned to Omaha to open a gallery. Lori met someone new and took a left turn into sustainable, local food for about a decade; including time as a Local Forager for a major grocer and organizing an outdoor local food feast for 500 with ten chefs. She continued to teach, make and show art as well and later went back to school for an MPA in Nonprofit Management, still with an eye to opening a gallery or museum work. After many years in the nonprofit world and a couple of bad bouts of burnout, Lori is back to working full time in a food based nonprofit, but sadly had to give up her studio. As a now single mom of a teen artist and actor who is homeschooling, life thankfully revolves around a great deal of creativity. Lori is juggling it all, often badly. At the moment, she is looking into even more education, possibly in the UK or Canada, while attempting to continue to make art. Lori is trying to develop an expanded online presence with an improved website, store, newsletter, Patreon, and other projects. She would like to tell the universe that yes, she is ready for that abundant wealth, supportive relationship, physical health, and peace of mind it has been promising on social media.
