My vibrant watercolor paintings are created primarily on heavy cotton paper, enabling extensive layering and depth. They often depict motifs such as falling sunsets, stormy skies, and turbulent waves — inspired by challenging moments and emotionally complex atmospheres. Through these works, I convey ideas and feelings in a distinctive visual language, defined by bold color choices, layered textures, and strong contrasts. I chose watercolor for its transparency and the challenge it demands. Its difficulty fuels my artistic growth, pushing me to strive for the best in every piece. Using both wet-on-wet and dry-on-wet techniques, I embrace the medium’s unpredictability. In watercolor, mistakes cannot be erased — only integrated — becoming part of the story. This aligns with my philosophy that every flaw holds potential for transformation, a lesson that shapes both my art and my personal journey. I blend elements of realism with expressive abstraction, creating a dialogue between form and feeling. My goal is to reflect the intricacies of nature, human experience, and emotion in ways that are personal yet universally resonant. I seek to face imperfections with grace, finding beauty in the unexpected, and to explore deep emotional states — the hidden truths we rarely confront. Drawn to the intense contrasts that define the human condition, much like the battle between light and darkness, I use my paintings to question what we carry forward from our past and how self-confrontation propels growth. For me, this is the essence of true progress. Artist Bio: Bahar Erten is a still life and plein air painter based in The Hague, Netherlands, known for vivid watercolors that capture the beauty and spirit of the natural world. Born and raised in Izmir, Turkey — a city of rich culture and breathtaking coastline — she grew up immersed in nature’s colors and forms. Childhood days spent exploring coastal landscapes, gardens, and vibrant markets instilled a lasting inspiration. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Dokuz Eylül University, where she explored multiple mediums before embracing watercolor for its fluidity, luminosity, and technical challenge. Alongside her art studies, she worked as a graphic designer and in art-related business roles, combining creativity with practical skills. Relocating to the Netherlands offered new landscapes and light to inspire her plein air work.
