About The Artwork

Bonobo is an endangered great ape, and along with the common chimpanzee, the closest extant relative to humans. What differs the bonobos' society from the chimpanzees' is, that they live in mainly peacefully organized groups, and resolve their conflicts with sex rather than with violence. They are stated to be capable of altruism, compassion, empathy, kindness, patience, and sensitivity. Females have a higher social status in bonobo society, and members of the species don't form permanent monogamous sexual relationships. All these and many other characteristics of this human relative led me to paint the thinking bonobo, in the midst of plentiful bananas, where she sits, looking ahead, absorbed in her thoughts, too busy to care for what is standing right next to her. Symbolism of the painting is quite simple, at the first glance, but as 'sometimes a cigar is just a cigar', there were many more thoughts going thru my head while picking this motive to depict. We live in a privileged part of the world, where most primary needs can be satisfied very quickly, meaning: there is no need to walk across the desert for five hours barefoot to get a gallon of water. The simple act of satisfying one's own thirst or hunger is accomplished in a few steps, in the the safety of our warm homes, where the only real threat has become being cut off of wi-fi. I'm talking about the average West-European inhabitant, not the misfortunate souls I meet while strolling thru the city-center, begging for a few coins to feed themselves, or the people coming to this environment from other countries, where wars have torn down their houses, and their lives. We have everything within a click away, in a manner of speaking, and yet, somehow there seem to be more sad, depressed, and confused folks in this place of material plentifulness, than in the reports I read from the countries of so called third world, the ones that we're so pleased to send help packages, patronizing them, and wanting eternal gratefulness from, instead of establishing the system of fair trade, which would bring better results in the long run. Thoughts like these, and a silent cry to dig deeper into ourselves in order to acknowledge the true values of being a human, led me to paint the Bonobo. So this particular bonobo lady is sitting, and thinking, where have we as a society gone wrong, not to be satisfied in abundance. She is also contemplating about her next step, anticipating the future, saying no to all yummy bananas, trading them for peace of mind, because she's well aware of the fact that every gift comes with an obligation. Perhaps one day she'll find a very special banana she won't turn her look from, but till then, you're more than welcome to take her as a companion, and hang the print of the painting on your wall to keep you company, comfort you in dark moments, or just to enjoy it out of the pure pleasure, and love for a good picture.
