Born in 1962 in Wonju, Korea, I have cultivated a diverse artistic practice that spans over 18 years, evolving from traditional porcelain and copper crafts to painting, multimedia installation, and video art. My work is a dialogue between the world and my inner self, grounded in what I define as "Tactile Thinking."
Artist Statement
My artistic practice does not begin with a mere visual observation of the world. Instead, I perceive nature and existence through "Tactile Thinking"—a cognitive process where I engage with the world using my entire body and sensory spectrum. To me, everything—be it a living organism or intangible elements like wind and scent—is a presence that communicates and influences me.
Painting is my most liberated and comfortable mode of communication. For me, the canvas is not a means of representation, but a space of exchange where my senses meet the world. The lines, textures, and physical movements recorded on the surface are the condensation of these sensory experiences. As I transitioned from early works focused on structural beauty and intense, expressive textures to a more free-form abstract expressionism, my focus shifted toward capturing the fundamental human emotions—compassion, gratitude, joy, and the weight of existence.
This "Tactile Thinking" extends beyond the two-dimensional plane into my installation and video works. By integrating invisible elements like air, wind, and fragrance, I transform the artwork from an object to be looked at into a space to be experienced. My goal is to invite the viewer to move beyond visual appreciation and engage with the work through their own physical presence. Through my art, I explore the interdependent relationship between humans and nature, hoping to inspire viewers to reconnect with the world and rediscover our coexistence with nature through their own senses.
