I found the large piece of a branch from the garden of our apartment block, and the closed-up Japanese rose (bottom left) in the same place. I often collect natural objects like these and then paint them from life to include in my compositions. I usually choose natural objects that are soon to decay to represent the transience and beauty of very ordinary things in the natural world. However, the stones that I put in my compositions are symbols of longevity: each one took millions of years for natural processes such as sedimentation and erosion to form. I started this work by drawing in the main shapes in charcoal. when I started to paint, I made a lot of changes to this basic design: removing some unwanted objects and adding others such as the tangled and fairly abstract vegetation and other objects in the top right. It took a long time to paint some of the details in the painting, such as the textures and colours on the branch, but I really enjoyed doing it - often forgetting to stop for lunch! The work is also painted on the sides and protected by acrylic spray varnish. It comes in a tube, to be re-stretched locally.

Turkey
I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
