About The Artwork

An original oil painting in the classical realist genre. One of a series of seven Paintings. I have been collecting props for about 10 years specifically to paint still lifes inspired by the Dutch old masters. So during covid lockdowns I had all the time(2 years) and inspiration to produce the seven different paintings all centred around a different Violin. My aim was atmosphere, so I opted for a dark interior, lit by a single source of light, to portray the type of scene you might find in yesteryear. The composition came from a combination of what looked good to the eye, coupled with strategic placement along the guidelines of "the golden mean", and sacred arithmetic..... because that's what the old masters did. And it worked! So painting on a wooden panel was required to be able to get the control of line, and using many different paint layers and glazes I arrived at the desired result....a violin still life, centred around a cobalt blue cut glass vase, with freshly cut roses, and table grapes from my garden. Backed by leather bound books from my private collection, set on a French provincial marble topped table, decked with loose pages of "olde" sheet music .The studio simply oozed fragrance! Hand framed my Master Paul Craig, who framed the four portraits I was commissioned to paint for the sets of the LOTR, and Hobbit Trilogies.

I work from a couple of studios on the sunny Kapiti Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. I share my studio space with my daughter, and we have exhibited together for nearly 20 years. I have painted in oils, since the 1960s, and still have a loyal following of collectors who purchased my works back in the early years, but it wasn't until 1989, and after I had a catastrophic motor bike accident, that nearly cost my life, that I closed down my business to concentrate solely on painting. As a consequence of my near death experience I was renamed Lazarus by my surgeons, which is often the moniker on my paintings. Like many New Zealanders I have also done some film and TV work, the most significant being four portrait paintings that featured in the first, and last installments of the Lord of the Rings, and the Hobbit trilogies Up until 2004 I painted solely on commission, and very rarely exhibited in art galleries. In 2006 I had my first one man exhibition, opened by my patron Sir Richard Taylor, of the famous Weta studios. Since then I have participated in many joint and solo exhibitions. During, and since the covid era I've found that most of the galleries I exhibited in have closed their doors, so I'm back to commissions, and the occasional exhibition,....and now like many other artists, trying my hand at online sales.
