When we build games, we do it together, over borders, and we build on a history older than the the first written words. This painting is based on a number of symbols - Egyptian hieroglyphs, blueprints of microchips, and ancient board games. I have combined them to express that when we bild games, we do it together, men and women of all ages - building on the legacy of human achievement. To the sides are my adaptations of the Egyptian hieroglyph symbols of “building” inspired by the icons assembled by Gardiner, no A35 and B9. In the middle there is a red structure that they are building. I made it as a combination of the blueprint of the first commercially released microprocessor (i4004 released in 1971) and the symbols I studied on the ancient board game Senet at the egyptology museum in Turin, Italy. Material wise, I made a monoprint as a background, and painted with acrylics. The red is an acrylic gush (Turners) produced in Japan, which has a more non-reflecting surface than regular acrylics, which makes the color appear more intense to the human eye. The symbols are derived from Gardiners "Egyptian Signs", no A35 and B9. It would mean that a woman is building something (a wall). I put Senet there instead of a wall. There are no Egyptian symbol for women building anything, so I constructed this one, reversing one where a woman plays an instrument. The symbols on the box are inspired by those that are carved on an actual Senet board game. I saw the game at the egyptology museum in Turin, Italy. I painted it in the autumn of 2022, and considered completed in January 2023. Details: Size: W 50 cm, H 38 cm Materials: acrylic on paper. ID: 2023-003-building-itogether-a2
