ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is an expressionism landscape painting. Abandoned Texas barns are some of my favorite painting subjects. I had not realized why until recently. I am a Baby Boomer, so I grew up when barns like this were common. I loved that simple time. The barns were usually built by hand by the rancher or farmer, maybe with the help of kin or friends. They had so much character, and no two were alike. Now, sturdier metal buildings are more common, but they don't have the same organic, hand-built appeal that these old guys do. This is the fourth (maybe fifth) time I have painted this old barn. Each painting has been in a different season and from a different perspective. The barn is near my home north of Abilene, Texas. This perspective includes a falling fence with barbed wire loose and a dead tree in the foreground. The painting was created with Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylic and finished with Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish. The edges are unpainted.

I am a Texas artist and have painted for most of my 71 years, being from a family of artists. My mother's youngest sister, aunt Patsy, spent a lot of time with me, guiding and encouraging me, and I credit her for my passion for art. She painted under the name of "von." When she died in August of 2018, I began placing "von" somewhere on the face of each painting as an acknowledgment of her role in my artistic endeavors. My inspirations come from my home environment in Texas. Things that I have taken for granted all my life are now frequent subjects for art. Mesquites, cactus, old barns and shacks, windmills, wooden fence posts, wildflowers and the like are favorite subjects. I am a colorist, and I enjoy using color to give new life to otherwise fading beauty. In addition to color, I strive for dimension, movement, depth and unusual perspective.
