La Catrina Mexican tradition. In ancient times poor people used to powder their faces with chickpea powder as a form of protest against the upper government class. It was later popularized by a newspaper cartoonist named Jose Guadalupe Posada hence the name La Catrina was later associated with the day of the dead but in reality they are two different things.
