ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Cabana Plant" takes us to the tropics on an inspirational and imaginative journey. With it's vibrant palette of colors and exotic array of pinks, a warm, vacation-like feeling is conveyed. Expressive strokes of the brush and saturated colors in pink, green, purple, violet, indigo blue and white become a magical mix in this simple, distinctive painting. A strong circular motion keeps the composition moving drawing the eye back again to the organic beauty of the plant and it's lively nature. The painting was inspired by a simple potted plant and it's beautiful variegated leaves that blended both green and deep fuschia hues together. As I became engrossed in the process I found myself traveling in my imagination to a tropical island with beautiful cabanas and a soft breeze under a warm gentle sun. Exaggerating the use of pink seemed fitting to the dream.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
