Here is the third (and final, I swear... I think) version of "Cactus Flower". This is what happens when you leave a painting, that you are not really sure of, in sight every day. I've found it's usually better to put it away for a while if you're not totally happy with it, and see it with fresh eyes later. That doesn't work if you are OCD, and can't get that image out of your head until it's fixed, or put to bed. Below is the description that I used when I posted the second version. Thought I'd leave it in as there are a few things written that are still relevant to the new version. [This is the re-painted version of a crazy idea from a few months ago. The values didn't work for me on the first try, and it needed a hair ribbon to add depth to the basic oval shape of the top of the head. I also changed the shirt color and made it more basic. Irene modeled for me by laying on the dining table, but still had some making up of weight, pivot points, and shirt folds. (she probably would've tried an actual handstand on a better day)]

I am now a New Mexico painter of oil and digital mediums (recently relocated from Northern California to be closer to family (2022)) My past work leaned more toward realism, but after taking a second job years ago as a caricature artist, I found the freedom of improvisation to be more rewarding. I work mainly from reference material, as opposed to Plein air, or sittings. Half of the enjoyment in my painting process is to piece a scene together with sketches of props and photos taken from life. I will either use family or friends as models, but lately have been using more high-tech methods to model my characters using posing and 3D image development programs.
